Overview

Punakha was considered the capital of Bhutan during the era of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the founder of Bhutan. Today, it is the administrative and religious center of the district and winter home of the center Bhutanese monastery. It is blessed with a temperate climate. Because of its natural drainage system from Pho Chu and Pho Mo rivers, the Punakha valley always can provide a rich supply of crops and fruits.

Punakha has one of Bhutan's most beautiful fortresses, located between the famous Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers. Built in 1637, Punakha was considered the royal palace of Bhutan until the middle of the 20th century. In Punakha, in addition to the ancient buildings and festivals held all year round, visitors also enjoy the majestic Himalayas from the top of the 3,100 meter-high Dochula pass.

Looking at the mysterious and attractive current appearance, not everyone knows it was once devastated by natural disasters such as wildfires, earthquakes, or floods, etc. Today, Punakha Dzong fort has returned to its golden age with an extremely attractive beauty.
